The Senate has confirmed the nomination for Governor and Deputy Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The screening and confirmation of the nominees took place on Tuesday during plenary after its resumption from its six (6) weeks recess.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had sent the list of the nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation in accordance with Section 10(3)(a) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2007).
The list of nominees sent to the Senate for screening were;
1. Olayemi Cardoso – Governor
2. Emem Usoro – Deputy Governor
3. Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo – Deputy Governor
4. Philip Ikeazor – Deputy Governor
5. Bala Bello – Deputy Governor
The Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central), moved that the Senate considers the request of the President and allow the nominees to come into the ared Chamber
Thereafter the Senate resolved into the Committee of the Whole to conduct the screening process.
The first nominees who was screened was Olayemi Cardoso
Last week, Cardoso resumed as the acting CBN governor pending his screening and expected confirmation by the Senate.
During his screening, he said, “We need to address the issue of corporate governance
We need to refocus CBN back to its core functions, address Inflation.
Gain access to foreign exchange rate, and this requires an independent review.
What is important to all of us is economic growth.”
Shortly after his screening the Senate screened the other four nominees for Deputy Governor of the CBN.
Furthermore, questions were thrown to the nominees after they had briefly introduced themselves.
At about 5:30pm the Senate wrapped up with the screening and approved all the nominees thereafter.
