“We must ensure that every line of this budget is scrutinized and implemented effectively,” he said. “Our role as legislators is to guarantee that the funds allocated for critical sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, and security, directly benefit the people.”

The proposed 2025 budget stands at 47.99 trillion naira, an increase from previous years. While acknowledging its progress, Okonkwo described the budget as relatively small compared to those of other populous nations. He highlighted the need for substantial reforms to drive impactful economic growth.

“Infrastructure and education are key to lifting the nation out of poverty,” Okonkwo said. “We need to focus on these sectors, especially education, which was allocated 3.5 trillion naira.”

Okonkwo also raised concerns about whether the budget would effectively reach the poorest Nigerians. “The true test is whether the budget addresses the needs of the poorest Nigerians,” he added.

The lawmaker assured Nigerians of his commitment to ensuring rigorous oversight during the implementation process, emphasizing that the National Assembly would work to ensure accountability and transparency in managing public funds.
