A team from Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is gearing up to travel to London to participate in legal proceedings against former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke. The EFCC’s involvement in the case is seen as crucial for Nigeria to potentially reclaim assets linked to alleged corruption.
Speaking on the matter, a source within the anti-corruption commission emphasized the necessity of Nigeria’s active participation in the trial. “This country may not be able to retrieve questionable assets from Alison-Madueke if the EFCC does not file an application as an interested party,” the source stated.
The EFCC team’s mission in London is to explore legal avenues and submit necessary documents to ensure Nigeria’s involvement in the case. The overarching goal is to secure the recovery of assets allegedly looted from Nigeria’s coffers during Alison-Madueke’s tenure as minister.
The EFCC claims to possess substantial evidence implicating Alison-Madueke in corrupt activities, including court orders pertaining to her properties and vehicles worth $2.5 million. Additionally, the commission has highlighted previous successes in asset recovery cases, including the final forfeiture of properties valued at approximately $80 million.
