The African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) and the Mediation Training Institute (MTI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at promoting peace and harmonious living across Africa. The signing ceremony took place at the AFLPM Secretariat in Abuja on Monday, attracting dignitaries from various sectors committed to creating a secure and enabling environment on the continent.
In her speech, Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor, Secretary General of AFLPM and former Vice President of Liberia, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to advancing beyond mere discussions about peace. She emphasized AFLPM’s resolve to provide training, education, and instil peaceful coexistence in the psyche of Africans, particularly focusing on the next generation and women, who she described as the carriers and sustainers of peace.

Howard-Taylor acknowledged the numerous challenges facing Africa, including conflicts, youth unrest, instability, and inequality. She highlighted the importance of unity and the unwavering commitment required to address these issues. “The strength of our mission lies in unity, unwavering resolve, and a resilient commitment to put peace at the forefront of all systems. We urge all patriotic citizens to invest in a future where every family, community, and nation can thrive in harmony and stability,” she stated.
Ambassador Segun Ogunyannwo, accredited mediator and President of MTI, described the MOU as a “synergy of the titans” during an interview with journalists. He expressed optimism that the collaboration between AFLPM and MTI would usher in a new African order where peace, justice, and harmonious coexistence are promoted as essential foundations for development and sustainable growth.
To commemorate the signing, AFLPM presented MTI with a remarkable gift—a mat inscribed with “BUILDING PEACEFUL SOCIETIES TOGETHER”—symbolizing their shared commitment to this great initiative.
The signing of the MOU marks a significant step toward fostering peace and stability in Africa, with both organizations poised to implement strategies and programs aimed at creating a safer and more peaceful continent for all.
