Climate Change : Senator Dickson Condemns Deforestation In Nigeria

Concerned about the increasing degradation of Niger Delta mangrove forests, senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson has urged the Federal Government and regulatory bodies to end the wave of deforestation in the country.

Addressing Senate Correspondents in Abuja after receiving a recognition award from Global Initiative for Climate and Environmental Sustenance (GICES), the Bayelsa West Senator condemned the illegal felling of trees across Nigeria’s forests.

He urged the government at all levels to join in the fight against illegal felling of trees and deforestation and encouraged afforestation in the country.

Senator Dickson who is currently Chairman Senate Committee on ecology and climate change, pledged to collaborate with the federal government to develop policies and frameworks geared towards the protection of existing forests and ecological resource.

Forests are said to be the largest natural carbon sink and a vital harbour of biodiversity but they are disappearing at an alarming rate.
